As I stood below looking up, I thought what a great spot for an ambush or a retreat. There was a running spring, and shielding these armed and dangerous warriors on three sides, was an impenetrable wall of rock. Because of tactics like these and other survival strategies, the White Mountain and San Carlos Apache were the last Western Native American people left standing.
